June date looms for third lane decision

Vietnam vets pay homage to fallen mates By Julia Evans ALMOST FIVE decades ago Eddie Bassett and Brian Mannix were fighting in the jungles of Vietnam. It was a conflict that claimed 39 New Zealanders, many of them their mates. These days, the two Vietnam veterans catch up at the Papanui RSA for a beer and talk about old times. On Anzac Day, Mr Mannix and Mr Bassett will proudly walk among surviving servicemen and women from other

conflicts. “On Anzac Day, I think of my grandparents. Both of my grandads were in World War 1 and I had uncles in World War 2. We think of all the guys, not just the old guys . . . even today’s wars,” Mr Mannix said. He now attends Anazc Day services with his grandchildren. Mr Bassett said it’s a very important day which all veterans look forward to. He said it’s a day to reflect on where his mates are. “All the guys get together, it’s

about the only time we do,” he said. They joke over a beer about how much faster modern artillery is. Mr Mannix was in the 161 Battery Artillery in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. “The infantry walked everywhere. Well, we had more brains and went on the back of a truck,” he said. He can’t help giving fellow vets a bit of stick. Mr Bassett was part of the Victor 1 Company Infantry. He saw fights in Malaya and

Borneo from 1965 before heading over to Vietnam two years later. In May, Mr Bassett will have a reunion with the rest of his company, but he said out of nearly 200 soldiers, there are now only 60 left. Now their generation is “getting on,” Mr Bassett said the RSA is looking to give more of a voice to the younger generation moving in. He’d love to see them taking a role in the future – “we’re all veterans,” he said.

By Julia Evans THE PLAN for a controversial third lane on the Waimakariri Bridge will go to the New Zealand Transport Agency for approval in June. It will then go out for public consultation, and the PapanuiInnes Community Board said it will make its voice heard again. On April 7, the greater Christchurch urban development strategy implementation committee approved the lane on the condition that it was for high occupancy vehicles only. Board chairwoman Ali Jones and deputy chairwoman Emma Norrish made a deputation opposing the lane for fear it will add significant congestion. But Ms Norrish said the fact it would only be for high-occupancy vehicles has lightened the blow. “It’s making the best of a bad situation,” she said. However, the board is still concerned about the predicted increase in traffic. “Any extra traffic that is coming in from the north, and is going into the CBD, has to go to through the St Albans area,” Ms Norrish said.

Tuesday April 18 2017 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

THERE’S NOTHING like sharing a few tales over a beer with your mates, and there’ll be plenty of that next Tuesday – Anzac Day. On page 1 today, reporter Julia Evans catches up with two Vietnam War veterans, mates from that entrenched conflict who share a beer regularly at the Papanui RSA. All wars are bad and the outcome is usually grim. Fighting in Vietnam would have been hell; similar to the Pacific during World War 2 where the enemy could be literally an arms length away hiding in the jungle, ready to strike. There was the heat, torrential rain, hand-to-hand fighting to the death, and taking fire at very short range. So think of the servicemen and women on Anzac Day. They certainly deserve a beer. - Barry Clarke

Sex worker dispute could go to court By Andrew King THE DISPUTE over sex workers being able to solicit in a residential area could be tested in the courts, a Christchurch lawyer said. St Albans resident Matt Bonis, along with solicitor and Labour candidate for Christchurch Central Duncan Webb presented a slide show to the city council detailing the rubbish, abuse, complaints and threats they have received. Mr Webb said the dispute lies in the definition of “commercial activity” set out in the city council public places Duncan bylaw. Webb City council head of strategic policy Helen Beaumont said sex workers do not use the billboards and banners that are typical of Helen Beaumont other business enterprises. “The mere presence of a person on a street corner, even if the manner of their attire and behaviour suggest that they may be working, is insufficient evidence that a commercial activity

In Brief COMMUNITY WORKER The Bishopdale Community Trust has recently undergone a staff restructure. A new community development worker, Chris Coles, has been appointed. Mr Coles has a long history of working in the community sector, including in the United Kingdom with ex-prisoners and people with mental health issues. SATELLITE SCHOOL When Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School merge campuses at the QE II site, Ferndale School will join them. A smaller satellite version of the Merivale-based special education school will be set up on the campus set to open in 2019.

HAD ENOUGH: City council head of strategic policy Helen Beaumont said sex workers do not use the billboards and banners that are typical of other business enterprises so it is hard to prove it is a commercial activity.

is being advertised or carried out,” she said. But Mr Webb said they have got the definition “wrong” and the city council could enforce the bylaw. He said if it comes down to residents saying it is commercial activity, and the city council says it isn’t, then it will have to be tested in the courts. Mr Bonis said he has “no problem” paying for Mr Webb’s time to take it to court, or work with city council staff to find a

solution within the bylaw. “I’m hopeful the city councillors, on an individual level, will take a commonsense approach to this problem,” he said. A report is due on May 4 detailing if a new clause in the public places bylaw is needed or if section 13 of the current bylaw can be effectively enforced. Section 13 states: The city council may declare from time to time, that any public place, or specified part of a public place:

a) Has been set aside for special use or activity; or b) cannot be used for a particular use or activity. Ms Beaumont said the city council is looking at using section 13 to solve the sex worker problem in the residential area. “The city council has obtained legal advice on the ability to enforce this policy in relation to sex workers but there are significant enforcement difficulties,” she said.

FOOTBALL FUNDING Burnside student and Halswell United player Caleb Hide has received funding to attend the NSR Kanga Cup football tournament in Canberra. The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board approved $350 to go towards his trip in July. Caleb is 13 and has been playing football since he was five. Ms Gillies has taken her Christchurch Connection exhibit to the Harrogate Spring Flower Show from Thursday to Sunday in Yorkshire. The exhibition will form a centrepiece within the show’s HortCouture theme, which also feature large-scale floral art displays paying tribute to Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Versace and Vivienne Westwood. “It’s an exciting opportunity not only to exhibit in Europe for the first time, but also to spread the word about our beautiful city and the rich culture visitors can expect to find when they visit us,” Ms Gillies said. Show director Nick Smith said he and his team were blown away by the stunning spectacle of Ms Gillies’ flower gowns. “They are a perfect fit for our spring HortCouture theme. CBHS look to continue winning run in pre-season By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High’s first XV will have a pre-season hit-out against Southland Boys’ High School tomorrow as they look towards defending their UC Championship title. The last time the two teams met was when Southland knocked CBHS out of the top eight competition last year, 41-20.

CBHS rugby co-ordinator and assistant coach Rob Smith said it will be “quite nice to play them again.” The team is still in its development stages, with a 30-man squad picked to play Southland and compete in Hamilton on Friday in the St Paul’s Collegiate School rugby festival. After that tournament, the

squad will be narrowed down to 22 for the first XV and another 22 will be picked for the second XV, Smith said. CBHS will open their account against Waimea Combined in the UC Championship on April 29. Smith said some of the key players to watch this year will be hooker Adam Reid, halfback Louie Chapman, fullback Ryan Barnes, winger Latham Kelly-

Foleni and captain and secondfive Alex Harford. The CBHS players will be fired up for the Southland game and the festival after ending the 43-game winning streak of South Africa’s Paarl Boys’ High School first XV with a penalty on full-time to win 38-36 on April 7. Club skipper wins St Albans cricketer of the year award By Andrew King CLUB CAPTAIN Clem Gibbens has been named St Albans player of the year. Gibbens, 27, was the third highest wicket taker in the club with 44 wickets at 11.11, scored 318 runs at 15.90 and skippered the victorious 2A Sabres twoday side. He was also named his team’s player of the year, best morning grade men’s all-rounder and won the award for most runs off a single over by a batsman, smashing 22 against Riccarton on December 17. “I’m not the kind of guy to sing my own praises; I did what I needed to do for the team,” Gibbens said. “There has been some really good cricketers who have taken the award before me and to be included with those guys and girls is quite humbling.” His 22 off one over, he said came at a time when his side were batting to save the game. “I thought I’d try accelerate things and I got the right deliveries . . . the guy down the other end did tell me to calm down at one point,” he said. His brother, Reid Gibbens picked up awards as well, including the Zin Harris Memori-

FOCUS ON HEALTH

11

Time Honoured 1 in 2 People Remedy Deficient in B12 According to a country Doctor “D.C. Jarvis” from Vermont in the USA cider vinegar and honey (CV & H) can be an important part of a long healthy life. Dr. Jarvis noted Vermonters who regularly consumed cider vinegar and honey had excellent health with many putting in a vigorous day’s work on the farm even when well into their eighties. Dr. Jarvis found the effects of cider vinegar and honey on arthritis can be remarkable with many patients reporting almost total relief after taking a course of the cider vinegar and honey. Dr. Jarvis surmised that the acid and potassium in cider vinegar counteracted calcium deposits and helped the body control calcium use. As well as a general tonic Dr. Jarvis found regular administration of cider vinegar and honey at the onset of complaints such as the common cold, sinusitis, asthmatic attacks, hay fever, and childhood diseases such as chicken pox and measles, was accompanied by an improvement in the condition with symptoms either disappearing, or the conditions were extremely mild and soon over. Apple cider vinegar contains all the goodness of the apple in a form that is readily accepted by the body. Scientists have found over 90 different substances in ACV, among them 20 important trace elements, minerals, essential enzymes, a number of different acids including malic acid, amino acids and roughage in the form of potash and pectin. A scientific study at the Shizuka University in Japan has proven ACV to have potent antioxidant benefits (It can destroy free radicals, which are a major factor in ageing.) and also the ACV can break down cholesterol formations in the blood vessels. ACV and H is a powerful tonic that also promotes digestion, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste, and helps neutralize any toxic substances that enter the body. It is important to note not all cider vinegar is made in the traditional way and results are likely to prove disappointing with these other vinegars.

Emerging research has shown as many as 50% of older adults and as many as 25% of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12. Scientists at Rush University Medical Center found those most deficient in vitamin B12 to have the smallest brain mass and the lowest scores on tests measuring shortterm memory, concentration and brain performance. Another study showed that older people with higher levels of B12 in their blood have bigger, healthier brains and score higher on cognitive tests than those with lower levels. Yet another recent landmark study showed that B12 supplementation slows the accelerated rate of brain shrinkage and declining cognitive function. B12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair, and prevention of homocysteine a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34% decrease risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+ who supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their 60’s who were low in B12.

with age as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in the form of Methylcobalamin sublingual tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and thru bypassing the digestive tract have been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in the body. Further detailed information is available from the Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, Ph: 388-5757 We are Always Happy to Help!

The reason so many people lack B12 appears to be our body’s ability to absorb it declining

Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

It has been proven that Lifelong Learning has many benefits with the obvious ones being the continuation of a learning journey, learning a new skill, increased confidence, meeting new people and much more. Our full range of classes can be viewed on our website www.risingholme.org.nz. New and exciting this term is Zentangle. What is this you might say - well if you can’t sit still enough for yoga, or your mind wanders in meditation, or you would like a creative aspect to your mindfulness, this

may work for you. This method of drawing does not require any previous drawing ability, it can be a 15 minute practice you can build into your everyday, or you can explore some of the more creative ways you can then use this design practise to make your own cards, images, or decorate products. This class will teach you a variety of ‘tangles’ and get you started on your Zentangle path in a supportive and creative atmosphere, and you can build it at a pace that suits you, within your time constraints or desire as you move through the term. Creative writing is back by popular demand with beginners and a more advanced classes being offered for term 2. So if you have always wanted to write but don’t know what or how? HEALTH & BEAUTY

Accupuncture without needles

SpeciAl offer - free firSt treAtment Book by may 19

For those seeking relief from pain caused by injury, and other physical and mental health issues, Chinese health practitioner Dr Lan Xiao offers a method of treatment that brings fast, and often immediate results. A graduate of Beijing Medical College, Dr Lan established an acupuncture clinic in Christchurch in 1993. As she continued her research and medical practice, she discovered a reflexology network on the human body, an exciting new discovery that became the foundation of her new treatment – acupuncture without needles. Instead of needles, Dr Lan uses a blunt instrument to stimulate the reflexology points on the face or other parts of the body. When the point is stimulated by pressure, a message is sent to the repair centre to promote healing. As Dr Lan explains, the treatment increases energy, which boosts the body’s healing system. The body will heal injuries naturally, she says, but that is a slow process. In addition, many people will start to use their injured part, for example a knee or an ankle, before it is properly healed, therefore prolonging the injury and even causing chronic pain. With her powerful treatment, results are produced very quickly – even instantly. She likens it to the differences between the power of a car – natural healing, of an aeroplane

– other types of natural healing, and of a rocket – reflexology network. It brings fast results because it is a very precise treatment, Dr Lan says. She uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body, including arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury, and there are no side-effects. Depression and anxiety, often the result of ongoing low energy, can also be overcome with Dr Lan’s treatment. For people that have gained weight due to their addiction to sugar, reflexology network treats the cause of the addiction, enabling them to more easily control their weight. Dr Lan has published a book, Dr Lan’s Reflexology Network, which introduces the treatment and explains how it works. Her website, www.drlansreflexologynetwork.co.nz, includes treatment videos, where people who have had the treatment speak about the fast relief it has brought them. Dr Lan is offering a free first treatment for all those who make an appointment by Friday, May 19. Phone 323 4168, mobile 027 231 8388.

SCHOOL OPEN DAYS

The ultimate campus for

Avonside and Shirley

A large Performing Arts Centre, three full-sized Gyms (complete with climbing wall) and four Sportsfields are among the key facilities that will be enjoyed by Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School in the future. The two schools are being rebuilt alongside one another and next to the new QEII Sport and Recreation Centre. They will open in time for Term Two of 2019 so students who enrol to study at the schools next year, will only spend just over a year on the schools’ existing sites. The new campus’ design was created by New Zealand’s ASC Architects – part of the ShapED consortium that is building and will also maintain the new schools. Avonside Girls’ Principal Sue Hume says being able to start from scratch has enabled ASC to come up with the ‘ultimate campus’. “We are delighted. The new campus will feature better facilities than either of our schools have ever had in the past.” Shirley Boys’ Headmaster John Laurenson agrees, describing the design as modern and sympathetic to the surrounding area. “The two schools will be set back from Travis Road with numerous trees and landscaped areas. It will be a very green campus,” says John Laurenson. As well as the major facilities, each school will have a long list of specialist learning facilities. Highlights include an Electronics Lab, a 2D and 3D Printing Room, six Science Labs and an Indoor Fitness Centre (complete with exercise equipment including rowing machines, stationery bikes and

treadmills). Sue Hume says the design enables the schools to offer students completely new experiences. “The facilities are just so much better than what we have now. For example, in each school’s Social Sciences and Media there is a large Editing Suite, Presentation Space, two Recording Studios and a Media Studio. It’s a big step up,” says Sue Hume. John Laurenson says the schools will continue to deliver quality single sex education. “Students will spend most of their day in a singlesex environment – that is really important to us. Single sex education benefits both boys and girls. Our students will also benefit, both educationally and socially, from being able to learn alongside and mix with students from the partner school. It is a fantastic opportunity.”

Two of the gyms on the campus will feature a climbing wall and be able to be linked for major events. The schools will also share a third gym

The schools will have numerous outdoor areas that will be landscaped to enable students and teachers to work outside.

The front of the campus will face Travis Road but be set behind a large landcaped courtyard and plantings.

When choosing the right school for our tamariki we often go by the ‘feeling’ we have when we visit as much as by the programmes that schools have on offer. Hornby High School’s feeling is one of positive relationships that support learning. In 2016 we reconsidered our vision as a school, and resolved that our aspiration is to be ‘A centre of creative excellence’ in everything that we do, whether visual arts or chemistry, volleyball or music, management or curriculum organisation. The world demands fewer people who can do repetitive tasks and more people who can think creatively and critically. In doing this we haven’t forgotten the importance of the strong relationships that we build with all of our students, and the importance of individualising learning pathways so that we come as close as we can to meeting every individual student’s needs. We are also committed to engaging with whanau in any and every way we can, this all taking place as we almost completely rebuild the physical school. I personally invite you to come along and meet with our skilled staff, and the amazing young people who make Hornby High School such a wonderful place to be.

Formation is at the heart of the education Middleton Grange School provides – a whole of life formation. We see learning as holistic; it aims to instruct the mind, shape the heart and equip the hand. The root of formation is faith and so Middleton Grange not only provides a first rate general education but also biblically based teaching in the Christian faith. Formation of the mind is not primarily intellectual contemplation or conceptual mastery but a learning that nurtures wisdom and discernment. It is a learning that challenges the mind to think, discern and critique the ideas and theories pupils are exposed to from a Christian perspective. The Christian School Network has been in existence for over ten years. Aidanfield Christian School, Emmanuel Christian School, Hillview Christian School and Middleton Grange School decided in 2005 that there was much to be gained by working together cooperatively. the character of each pupil to develop habits of righteousness, compassion and integrity. This formation of the mind and heart generates responsiveness. We want our pupils to engage in the society they live in, to be of benefit and blessing in a practical way. For Middleton Grange School, while our academic results are of the highest level, what is highly prized, is that our pupils exercise wisdom, serve the community and promote the well-being of others. It is about forming the pupil to be the person God created them to be. All of this is summed up in the school motto: Character, Excellence, Service for the Glory of God.

The success of the network has seen other schools wanting to join in. Early in the piece Rangiora New Life School became part of the network. The schools joined together to support the genesis of Ashburton Christian School and also culminated in the start up of a brand new school in Rolleston in 2015. The schools have developed interlocking enrolment schools which assists in providing transparent pathways in Christian education from new entrant through to Year 13. A further strength has been a cooperative engagement with the Ministry of Education who have been pivotal in assisting the networks successful development.

SCHOOL OPEN DAYS

Educating boys with boys Medbury School is the only independent boys’ school in Christchurch, offering an education for both dayboys and boarders from Years 1 to 8. Medbury offers a traditional education, encompassing the Medbury values of manners and respect, and their vision is to provide an education which prepares boys for life in the 21st Century. Whilst placing a high value on Literacy and Numeracy in a ‘boysonly’ learning environment, Medbury also believes in helping boys develop as confident individuals, and developing personal attributes, such as organisation, confidence, relationships with others, and independence. At Medbury, the focus is on the ‘whole boy’, and small class sizes enable teachers to deliver a personalised learning programme, ensuring that every boy has the support, extension and encouragement he needs to discover and develop his particular strengths. The learning programmes are all focused on a boy’s way of learning, providing them with a structured

environment, with competition, boundaries and an opportunity to succeed. Medbury’s Headmaster, Peter Kay, states “Our passion at Medbury is to unlock the potential of every boy. It is why we exist – to understand each boy’s opportunities and challenges, then personalise an education which encourages him to strive to be the very best he can be. Friendships, values and a quiet self-confidence that comes with sound preparation, will provide an invaluable foundation for the boys’ educational journeys ahead.” For more information please contact Tanya Moore (Headmaster’s PA) on 03 351 6169, email office@medbury.school. nz or visit www.medbury.school.nz

Papanui High School

- preparing students for their future “Our aim is simple... to provide the best education possible for every student”

We are making a difference for our students and they are doing incredibly well. The school has worked hard to consolidate recent initiatives to ensure sustained and continuous improvement. Giving students the opportunity to study from an innovative and broad curriculum is critical to providing each student a pathway that meets their individual needs. We allow for a greater range and flexibility in subject choice including the utilization of the secondary/tertiary interface. This reinforces the philosophy underpinning personalised learning and is strongly supported by understanding our students’ interests, passions, talents, and ultimately their career aspirations. All that we do here is reinforced by positive relationships, an ethos of caring, cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and high expectations – what we call “Our Full service Model”. The school highly values the connectedness of curricular and co-

curricular learning. We have a philosophical understanding that the holistic development of the student is critical to their individual success. We understand that for effective learning to take place, it has to be implemented in such a way that students will be highly engaged. The school does this in a ‘forward thinking’ way by creating learning environments that allow our students to see value in what they do and achieve. Papanui “PRIDE” is what we represent and we demonstrate this by having young adults leave our school as confident learners who have gained the appropriate qualifications and social skills to become valued contributing members of society. You are invited to view our website, school charter, ERO report, and/or contact the school for more information. We look forward to welcoming all prospective students and their families/ whanau to visit our school.

Most importantly, our pastoral care and spirituality based programmes build resilient young people who relate well, and who have the confidence and empathy to build meaningful and lasting relationships. Independent research shows both boys and girls achieve higher academic success in single sex schools. We are proud of our girls’ achievements in the 2016 academic results with 100% pass rate in International Baccalaureate and NCEA Level 1, plus 98.9% at Level 2 and 96.6% at Level 3. We also offer many opportunities for our girls to interact with their male counterparts on both an academic, performing arts, sports and social basis, with age appropriate activities, while holding on to the best daily learning environment. We are inaugural winners of the Prime Minister’s National Excellence in Education Awards in 2014 and received a 5 year ERO review in 2015. The staff is committed to delivering excellent education for the future world in a style which engages boys and develops intrinsic motivation. A deeply embedded restorative culture underpins our pastoral care and we focus on high engagement for boys in extracurricular activities, both cultural and sport. 95% of our students participate in sport and 75% of our staff coach .We are involved in elite competition across a broad range of sports, including rugby, league, football, basketball, rowing, cricket, softball and volleyball.

The College was opened by the Sisters of Mercy in 1918 and has grown to accommodate 800 students within its beautiful grounds. Our Mission is to: “Empower each young woman to determine her potential, live Gospel values, confidently embrace life-long learning and as a Mercy woman be inspired to make a difference”. We have a proud academic history, annually achieving academic results, which are among the best in the country. Students set high goals and the College supports them in striving for excellence.
