Vietnam vets pay homage to fallen mates By Julia Evans ALMOST FIVE decades ago Eddie Bassett and Brian Mannix were fighting in the jungles of Vietnam. It was a conflict that claimed 39 New Zealanders, many of them their mates. These days, the two Vietnam veterans catch up at the Papanui RSA for a beer and talk about old times. On Anzac Day, Mr Mannix and Mr Bassett will proudly walk among surviving servicemen and women from other

conflicts. “On Anzac Day, I think of my grandparents. Both of my grandads were in World War 1 and I had uncles in World War 2. We think of all the guys, not just the old guys . . . even today’s wars,” Mr Mannix said. He now attends Anazc Day services with his grandchildren. Mr Bassett said it’s a very important day which all veterans look forward to. He said it’s a day to reflect on where his mates are. “All the guys get together, it’s

about the only time we do,” he said. They joke over a beer about how much faster modern artillery is. Mr Mannix was in the 161 Battery Artillery in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. “The infantry walked everywhere. Well, we had more brains and went on the back of a truck,” he said. He can’t help giving fellow vets a bit of stick. Mr Bassett was part of the Victor 1 Company Infantry. He saw fights in Malaya and

In May, Mr Bassett will have a reunion with the rest of his company, but he said out of nearly 200 soldiers, there are now only 60 left. Now their generation is “getting on,” Mr Bassett said the RSA is looking to give more of a voice to the younger generation moving in. He’d love to see them taking a role in the future – “we’re all veterans,” he said.

By Julia Evans THE PLAN for a controversial third lane on the Waimakariri Bridge will go to the New Zealand Transport Agency for approval in June. It will then go out for public consultation, and the PapanuiInnes Community Board said it will make its voice heard again. On April 7, the greater Christchurch urban development strategy implementation committee approved the lane on the condition that it was for high occupancy vehicles only. Board chairwoman Ali Jones and deputy chairwoman Emma Norrish made a deputation opposing the lane for fear it will add significant congestion. But Ms Norrish said the fact it would only be for high-occupancy vehicles has lightened the blow. “It’s making the best of a bad situation,” she said. However, the board is still concerned about the predicted increase in traffic. “Any extra traffic that is coming in from the north, and is going into the CBD, has to go to through the St Albans area,” Ms Norrish said.

THERE’S NOTHING like sharing a few tales over a beer with your mates, and there’ll be plenty of that next Tuesday – Anzac Day. On page 1 today, reporter Julia Evans catches up with two Vietnam War veterans, mates from that entrenched conflict who share a beer regularly at the Papanui RSA. All wars are bad and the outcome is usually grim. Fighting in Vietnam would have been hell; similar to the Pacific during World War 2 where the enemy could be literally an arms length away hiding in the jungle, ready to strike. There was the heat, torrential rain, hand-to-hand fighting to the death, and taking fire at very short range. So think of the servicemen and women on Anzac Day. They certainly deserve a beer. - Barry Clarke

Sex worker dispute could go to court By Andrew King THE DISPUTE over sex workers being able to solicit in a residential area could be tested in the courts, a Christchurch lawyer said. St Albans resident Matt Bonis, along with solicitor and Labour candidate for Christchurch Central Duncan Webb presented a slide show to the city council detailing the rubbish, abuse, complaints and threats they have received. Mr Webb said the dispute lies in the definition of “commercial activity” set out in the city council public places Duncan bylaw. Mr Bonis said he has “no problem” paying for Mr Webb’s time to take it to court, or work with city council staff to find a

solution within the bylaw. “I’m hopeful the city councillors, on an individual level, will take a commonsense approach to this problem,” he said. A report is due on May 4 detailing if a new clause in the public places bylaw is needed or if section 13 of the current bylaw can be effectively enforced. Section 13 states: The city council may declare from time to time, that any public place, or specified part of a public place:

a) Has been set aside for special use or activity; or b) cannot be used for a particular use or activity. Ms Beaumont said the city council is looking at using section 13 to solve the sex worker problem in the residential area. “The city council has obtained legal advice on the ability to enforce this policy in relation to sex workers but there are significant enforcement difficulties,” she said.

FOOTBALL FUNDING Burnside student and Halswell United player Caleb Hide has received funding to attend the NSR Kanga Cup football tournament in Canberra. The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board approved $350 to go towards his trip in July. Caleb is 13 and has been playing football since he was five. The cup is the largest youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.

Merivale costume designer featuring at UK flower show AWARD-WINNING designs from Merivale costumier and artist Jenny Gillies will be one of the main attractions at a flower show in the United Kingdom. Ms Gillies has taken her Christchurch Connection exhibit to the Harrogate Spring Flower Show from Thursday to Sunday in Yorkshire. Sam Scoon, along with seven other apprentices from across the region, donned their tool belts and safety gear for the test to build an outdoor table and bench seating. Mr Scoon, 20, worked under a fixed timeframe and the final product was judged on workmanship, skill and time management. The challenge tested the apprentices’ attention to detail with carpentry joints not typically included in an outdoor furniture set.

CBHS look to continue winning run in pre-season By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High’s first XV will have a pre-season hit-out against Southland Boys’ High School tomorrow as they look towards defending their UC Championship title. The last time the two teams met was when Southland knocked CBHS out of the top eight competition last year, 41-20.

CBHS rugby co-ordinator and assistant coach Rob Smith said it will be “quite nice to play them again.” The team is still in its development stages, with a 30-man squad picked to play Southland and compete in Hamilton on Friday in the St Paul’s Collegiate School rugby festival. After that tournament, the

squad will be narrowed down to 22 for the first XV and another 22 will be picked for the second XV, Smith said. CBHS will open their account against Waimea Combined in the UC Championship on April 29. Smith said some of the key players to watch this year will be hooker Adam Reid, halfback Louie Chapman, fullback Ryan Barnes, winger Latham Kelly-

Club skipper wins St Albans cricketer of the year award By Andrew King CLUB CAPTAIN Clem Gibbens has been named St Albans player of the year. Gibbens, 27, was the third highest wicket taker in the club with 44 wickets at 11.11, scored 318 runs at 15.90 and skippered the victorious 2A Sabres twoday side. He was also named his team’s player of the year, best morning grade men’s all-rounder and won the award for most runs off a single over by a batsman, smashing 22 against Riccarton on December 17. “I’m not the kind of guy to sing my own praises; I did what I needed to do for the team,” Gibbens said. “There has been some really good cricketers who have taken the award before me and to be included with those guys and girls is quite humbling.” His 22 off one over, he said came at a time when his side were batting to save the game. “I thought I’d try accelerate things and I got the right deliveries . . . the guy down the other end did tell me to calm down at one point,” he said. School sports co-ordinator Olivia Gill said the final was a contest in the first half, and after the change over at half time, the Great Whites managed to edge forward and beat St Martins School 7-4.

“As we had several players leave the team and head on to high school, we are in the rebuilding stage of developing our water polo teams. Dressing 2 Limes 1 Tbsp Light soy sauce 1 Tbsp Sesame oil Directions Brush the salmon steaks with soy sauce and dust on both sides with five spice powder. Heat a nonstick frying pan, add a film of oil and cook salmon for two to three minutes on each side. This will cook the salmon to medium – cook a little longer if you prefer your fish well-done. Serve with Chinese cabbage slaw and lime or lemon halves on the side to squeeze over. To prepare the Chinese cabbage slaw and the dressing Combine salad ingredients (Chinese cabbage, finely sliced with seeds removed red pepper, finely sliced spring onions, sliced on an angle celery sticks, bean sprouts), except sesame seeds, in a large bowl. Blend dressing ingredients together. Pour dressing over salad, toss well and serve scattered with sesame seeds.

Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. A large Performing Arts Centre, three full-sized Gyms (complete with climbing wall) and four Sportsfields are among the key facilities that will be enjoyed by Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School in the future. The two schools are being rebuilt alongside one another and next to the new QEII Sport and Recreation Centre. They will open in time for Term Two of 2019 so students who enrol to study at the schools next year, will only spend just over a year on the schools’ existing sites. The new campus’ design was created by New Zealand’s ASC Architects – part of the ShapED consortium that is building and will also maintain the new schools. Avonside Girls’ Principal Sue Hume says being able to start from scratch has enabled ASC to come up with the ‘ultimate campus’. “We are delighted. The new campus will feature better facilities than either of our schools have ever had in the past.” Shirley Boys’ Headmaster John Laurenson agrees, describing the design as modern and sympathetic to the surrounding area. “The two schools will be set back from Travis Road with numerous trees and landscaped areas. It will be a very green campus,” says John Laurenson. As well as the major facilities, each school will have a long list of specialist learning facilities. Highlights include an Electronics Lab, a 2D and 3D Printing Room, six Science Labs and an Indoor Fitness Centre (complete with exercise equipment including rowing machines, stationery bikes and

treadmills). Sue Hume says the design enables the schools to offer students completely new experiences. “The facilities are just so much better than what we have now. For example, in each school’s Social Sciences and Media there is a large Editing Suite, Presentation Space, two Recording Studios and a Media Studio. It’s a big step up,” says Sue Hume. John Laurenson says the schools will continue to deliver quality single sex education. “Students will spend most of their day in a singlesex environment – that is really important to us. Single sex education benefits both boys and girls. Our students will also benefit, both educationally and socially, from being able to learn alongside and mix with students from the partner school. It is a fantastic opportunity.”
